Late sir Yashwantraoji Bhikaji Chavan, a legendary educationalist, an able educational administrator was born in a poor family in Ratnagiri district on 3rd March,1942. He had completed his vernacular education in the village and joined Gokhale education society as a peon. While working, he completed education and stepped up to superintendent. Having love and affection for kids, respect for poor and needy and becoming concerned about lack of educational facilities, he started "SHRAMIK VIDYALAYA" on 3rd March 1983 in Meghwadi, Jogeshwari (East), Mumbai - 60. His emphasis was on good & quality education as well as modern trends in the field of education. Now this small plant has become a huge tree.

He started various cultural and educational activities for the all round development of the child. He had a neck to neck successful fight with MHADA for the possession of school land. He died on 12th August 2007 with an unfulfilled dream of a well equipped school building for the students. Now his dream has been taken over by his courageous, desolute wife Smt. Smitaji Yashwant Chavan.
